Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield caps come in a few standard sizes – 6-inch, 8-inch, and 13-inch round. The 13-inch sits on the outside of the clay tile; the 6 and 8 slide inside the flue liner. If you’re not sure what you have, look for a stamped size on the underside of the cap base, or measure across the flue opening itself. We also work with DuraFlex and Gelco caps when that’s what the flue calls for, but a HeatShield cap is HeatShield-specific in how it seats. One thing we see in Waterford regularly: someone buys a cap online, gets the wrong outside diameter, and the first good wind sends it into the gutter. Older HeatShield caps used a set-screw design; newer ones are often push-fit with a friction band. • You can hear birds in the flue. A cap’s side screen is the only thing keeping starlings and squirrels out. Once that screen rots or pulls away, nesting follows within a season.
• The cap is missing or bent after a storm. High winds off Long Island Sound hit Waterford chimneys hard, and an old cap with a rusted base collar won’t survive. We see it after every March storm.
• Rust streaks running down the chimney crown. That’s the cap’s base plate corroding. Left alone, it stains the mortar and lets water pool around the flue tile.
• A draft you can’t explain. A damaged cap changes how air moves through the flue. If the room feels cold near the hearth, the cap’s probably not seating right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can absolutely check a few things yourself: look for rust, wiggle-test the cap with a pole from the ground, and note whether the screen is intact.
