Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing

• Smoke pushes back into the room on windy days. The plate isn’t sealing at the top, usually because the cable has stretched or the spring has lost tension. This lets wind pressure drive down the flue instead of across it.
• You feel cold air dropping from the fireplace even with the damper closed. The gasket around the plate edge has flattened or the plate is misaligned from years of heat cycling. A top damper should stop that draft dead.
• The lever or cable is hard to move, or won’t move at all. Creosote buildup and rust seize the pivot points. If you force it, you’ll snap the cable inside the flue, and then the plate is stuck wherever it is.
• You hear a metallic rattle when the wind blows. The plate is vibrating against the flue tile, which means the spring that holds tension is weak. Left alone, that plate will eventually crack at the hinge.
• The plate won’t stay open during a fire. The hold-open mechanism is worn out. You shouldn’t have to prop a fire poker against the lever to keep the damper from drifting shut while you’re burning.

None of these symptoms fix themselves. They get worse, and the parts are cheaper to replace than the damage a stuck plate causes.

You can safely check a few things from inside the house. Look at the lever or cable mounting for obvious cracks. Move the lever gently and feel for resistance or grinding. Look up the flue with a flashlight and see if the plate is hanging level. That tells you something’s wrong, but it won’t tell you what’s actually failed up top.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong with Famco dampers: the cable runs through a spring-loaded tensioner, and if that spring lets go while you’re pulling the cable, it’ll take a chunk out of your hand. The plate itself sits forty feet above your firebox, connected to hardware that requires rooftop work on a flue crown. That’s not a ladder-and-flashlight job. If the damper sticks and you force it, you can crack the flue tile and turn a $200 repair into a $2,000 liner job.
