To identify your liner, look for the etched label near the top termination cap. No label? Measure the inside diameter with a tape measure. Six inches means six inches, and that is the number that matters.

Signs Your DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

• Water streaks or rust staining on the liner wall. This is the earliest warning sign. Condensate from an oil furnace or a blocked cap drips down and starts eating the alloy. In Waterford’s wet winters, caps clog and this accelerates fast.
• Smoke odor in the house even with the damper open. A separated seam lets flue gases escape into the chimney chase instead of going out the top. The smell is usually strongest in upstairs rooms adjacent to the chimney.
• Flakes of metal or scale in the cleanout. When you open the cleanout door at the base of the chimney and see what looks like coffee grounds, that is the liner shedding. It does not get better on its own.
• The furnace or boiler shuts off intermittently. A partially collapsed liner restricts draft, and modern appliances have safety switches that trip when exhaust cannot vent. If the reset button becomes a habit, check the flue before you replace the appliance.
• White efflorescence on the exterior chimney brick. Moisture escaping through a failed liner carries salts and minerals into the masonry. You see it as white chalky deposits, and it means water is moving where it should not be.
