Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Waterford Owner’s Guide

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes several cap lines, and the right one for your chimney depends on the flue size and what you’re burning. Their stainless steel caps with expanded metal screening are the most common ones we see on Waterford chimneys, especially the single-flue and multi-flue models sold through masonry supply houses in New London County. They also make a line of copper caps, which age differently but fail differently too.

The compatibility gotcha with Gelco caps is simple: they are sized by outside flue tile dimensions, not the cap’s overall width. A cap listed as 13″ x 13″ is meant to slip over a flue tile measuring roughly 13 inches square. If your tile is oddball, say 8.5″ x 12.5″, you need an adjustable or custom-fit bracket and not just whatever is on the shelf. We see more mis-sized Gelco caps on older capes near Oswegatchie Hills than anywhere else, because those chimneys were built before standardized flue tile sizing became the norm.

Some Gelco caps use a bolt-on leg bracket system, and others are slip-in with a pressure clamp. The leg bracket models are easier to service and replace in sections. If you still have the original box or packaging, the model number is usually printed on a small sticker on the inside of the skirt or on the bracket arm. If it’s gone, we measure the tile and match from there.

As for OEM versus aftermarket: Gelco’s own stainless caps are good, but their screen mesh is tighter than some competitors, which matters if you burn wet wood. We also carry compatible options from Copperfield and Olympia Chimney when the OEM part is on backorder or when a different mesh spacing will actually serve you better.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust bleeding down the flue tile. This usually means the cap’s galvanized base or legs are corroding and the runoff is staining the masonry. Once the base is compromised, water is getting in, not just running on the surface.
• Torn or missing screening. The expanded metal screen is the first thing to go, especially after a few freeze-thaw winters along the shore. Once there is even a small hole in the mesh, starlings and squirrels can get in. We pull a lot of nesting material out of Waterford flues every spring.
• Rain inside the firebox after a storm. A cap that has come loose from its bolts or lost its hood will let water run straight down into the firebox. You’ll see puddling on the damper or a wet ash pile, sometimes days after the rain stops.
• Cap sitting crooked or shifted. Wind, ice, and thermal expansion can work the legs loose over time. A shifted cap leaves a gap between the skirt and the tile crown, which is an open invitation for water and pests.
• Loud flue noise in windy weather. A damaged cap changes airflow across the flue opening. If you’re hearing a howl or a rattle when the wind picks up off the Sound, the cap is often the culprit.

None of these mean you are in immediate danger, but a failed cap accelerates every other chimney problem. Water hitting the flue tile and firebox shortens the life of the liner and the masonry. We would rather fix the cap now than rebuild the crown later.

• Condition of the existing hardware: if the old legs are seized or the tile needs minor grinding to seat the new skirt, that adds a little labor.
